Wayanad is one of the most beautiful districts of Kerala. Located in its north-eastern part of the state
and inhabited by many indigenous tribal people it is situated on the Western Ghats. The word ‘Wayanad’ means ‘Land of Paddy fields’. Historians have found traces of human life in this region dating back to ten centuries before Christ. Ruled by many mighty kings like Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in the past, we can find the recorded history of this region form 18th century onwards. Later when the British came they began the cultivation of tea and cash crops which added commercial importance to this district. Climate - This district has a very healthy climate. The mean temperature ranges between 18o C and 290 C and the humidity is very high, sometimes as much as 95%. Strong winds are common out here and there are basically four seasons which are the Summer (March to May), South – west monsoon (June to September), North East monsoon (October to November) and Winter (December to February).
People – majority of people in this region are indigenous tribes like Paniyas, Kurumas, Adiyars, Kurichyar, Ooralis, Kadans etc. it has the maximum number of adhivasi population in the state. Some of them are landowners and some labourers. There are also a large number of migrants coming from other parts of the state and the country. People of all religions like Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christians, Jains etc live here.
Wildlife – Wayanad has diverse varieties of flora and fauna. The most important crop grown out here is coffee amidst the jungle of rosewood, anjili, mullumurikku etc. besides coffee plantations here are also many spice plantations which fill the air with pleasant smell. The greenery provided by these plantations give a soothing appearance to the atmosphere and makes the surrounding pleasant and enjoyable. Some other species of plants and trees found out here are eucalyptus, oak tree, teak, areca nut, jackfruit. The different kinds of animals found out here are monkeys, loris, mongoose, jungle cats, squirrels, jackals, hares, elephant, bear etc.
Places of interest – some of the Places of interest that you can visit out here are the hills, rocks and valleys of the Chembra Peak, the Edakkal Cave which is actually a cleft, the Kuruva island with its 950 acres of forest is an ideal picnic spot, the picturesque scenery of Lakkidi, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary near the Karnataka Border, the wild forest and deep caves of Pakshipathalam, the Pazhassi Raja Tomb where you can go for boating and have a picnic, the Pookot Lake which is a natural fresh water lake, the Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, Kanthanpura waterfalls, Soochippara waterfalls and the Banasura Sagar Dam which is the largest earth dam in india.
