Orchha Sanctuary

The Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh is one of the must visit tourist destinations in this area.
This is a destination with a difference and is a treat for all the nature lovers. Even for the ordinary traveller it has plenty to offer. The breath taking natural beauty and magnificent charm of this place is something worth experiencing in this place. Spread over an area of 46 square kms this sanctuary is covered with lush green trees of Kardhai and Dhawa. One can see a large variety of flora and fauna in this sanctuary. It is also a great place for hiking and trekking. The Jamni and Betwa rivers flowing through the forest makes it more soothing and attractive. For accommodation there is the government run rest house which provides affordable and comfortable accommodation to the tourists. There are also a few other resorts and hotels for additional accommodation option.

This sanctuary was established in 1994 and has gained popularity over the years. Even though it may not be home to the exotic animals or plants the flora and fauna found here are quite interesting. Some of the important animals found here are spotted deer, monkey, jackal, blue bull, peacock, wild pig and many varieties of birds. Teak, Palash and Kahir are some of the principal species of birds that one can see here. Along with them there are about 200 other species of bird that this sanctuary is home to. This sanctuary is particularly popular for its bird watching experience and many tourists come here especially for this. Added to this is the beautiful experience provided by the soothing environment. You can use petrol and diesel four wheelers to drive around the sanctuary. Over the years this place has become more popular among the foreign tourists and is frequently visited by them in large numbers.

Some other things you can do out here beside Bird watching are fishing, river rafting, boating, canoeing, trekking, camping and hiking. It is a great place for all those with adventurous nature and they will have plenty of options to have the ultimate thrill of life. Besides this there are also other places of interest in and around like the Raja Ram Temple, Chaturbhuj temple, Laxmi Narayan Temple, the Orchha Fort, the Chhatris, Janahgir Mahal, Phool Bagh, Rai Parveen Mahal etc. Orchha being a town of historical and cultural importance is a great delight for the tourists who visit it.

Visitors are expected to maintain silence and discipline during excursions. They are expected not to litter the sanctuary and obey the rules and regulations. It is advisable not to carry too much luggage while visiting the sanctuary to ensure they can focus on enjoying it properly.

How to get there – By rail, road and airways. Orchha has its own railway station and the nearest bus stand is a Jhansi which is about 17 kms away. The nearest airport is at Gwalior 124 kms. Plenty of local taxis are available to ferry passengers from one place to another.
