Nelliyampathy is an enchanting hill
station positioned at a distance of 60 km from Palakkad in Gods own Country
Kerala in South India and is situated at an altitude of 1585 meters above the sea level on the Western Ghats. Seetharkundu:
According
to a legend, once Rama, Sita and Lakshman used to live here and the name was
thus given.
Positioned within the Karuna Plantations, Seetharkundu magnetizes
numerous tourists with the drive from Nelliyampathy which offers a remarkable
vision of the plains, as far as Palakkad town and its surrounding sites. Beside
the beautiful 100 meter waterfalls is a gnarled tree, which is a major
attraction of this place.
Mampara
Grasslands: It is rambling grassland which can be reached through perfidious road,
but the striking view of Palakkad range thick forests, collage of flourishing
paddy fields and luxuriant slopes that one can view from this location is truly
beyond imagination.
Orange and
Vegetable Plantation: This plantation farm was set up by the then State of Cochin
to provide foods for the British troops and resolve the crisis that aroused in
the land. About 237 acres of land are re-planted with orange trees. The fruit
preservation unit in Pulayanpara is also open to the tourists.
Palagapandi Estate: It contains a bungalow
of British era that has now been transformed to a resort. Even the estate is enclosed
with plantations of tea, coffee and cardamom one can also sight a lot of
wildlife here if fortunate.
Pothundy: Located on the way to Nelliyampathy
nearer to the pictorial village of Nemmara, Pothundy is a pleasing reservoir
constructed transversely the streams of the Meenachadypuzha, Padipuzha and the
Ayalar River.
Trekking: One can also relish
various trekking trails along the mountain ranges of this place which ranges
from 500-1600 meters. Kaikkaty serves as an idyllic base camp for trekking and
other diversed facilities.
Apart from these magnetisms one can
also visit to the various wildlife sanctuaries of Parambikulam, Anamalai and Peechi-Vazhani
which are located close to this hill station. The Nelliyampathy Range
comprising of fetter of points divided by valleys that flourish in emerald
forests teeming with wildlife was once possessed by the Maharajas of Kochi and
Kollengode but now is part of the Nemmara Forest Division.
How to
Reach: The
nearest railheads are at Palakkad 52 km from Nelliyampathy, Coimbatore and
Thrissur. If you are coming via air then you have to reach Thrissur or Palakkad
from the nearest airport at Cochin/Coimbatore to reach Nemmara from where you
can get buses/taxi to reach Nelliyampathy. One has to depend on the taxi/jeeps
while in Nelliyampathy.

Kaikkaty (first town of Nelliampathy) one can stay at the government run guest houses
which will provide you with both vegetarian and non vegetarian foods. You can
also stay at varied privately owned houses at Nelliyampathy itself.
